Mather Hospital Careers
As a resident of Mather Hospital, you have the distinction of working with, and being mentored by, a remarkable group of board-certified physicians. Our faculty includes nationally recognized clinicians and researchers, with vast levels of experience teaching and guiding students in their journey to becoming a licensed physician. All of our faculty are board certified, some in in multiple specialties, bringing a well-rounded knowledge to each rotation they supervise. The physicans listed below are considered the core faculty of the residency program. All of these physicians hold academic appointments at Stony Brook Medicine.
Lucien Cardinal, MD is the Program Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Cardinal graduated from Hahnemann University School of Medicine, and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Norwalk Hospital. He has served as academic faculty in various Internal Medicine Residency Programs. His leadership roles have included Section Director for Emergency Medical Services in the Department of Internal Medicine at Mount Vernon Hospital; Director of Ambulatory Care and Emergency Medicine and also Interim Medical Director at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center; as well as Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program and Associate Director of Ambulatory Care at the Queens Hospital Center. He developed and served as Program Director for a pilot program designed to supplement the skills of board certified primary care physicians practicing Emergency Medicine in underserved urban and rural environments. Dr. Cardinal has garnered numerous honors throughout his career. He currently serves on the Graduate Medical Education Committee for the American College of Physicians in the state of New York and is a reviewer for the British Medical Journal. In his spare time he enjoys playing improvisational guitar and spending time with his family and chocolate Labrador Retriever.
Dan Kass, MD serves as the Assistant Program Director, focusing on outpatient activities. Since completing his residency at Nassau County Medical Center in 1988, Dr. Kass has served as an attending physician at Mather hospital. He has run a successful Internal Medicine practice in the community for the past twenty-five years, and is uniquely qualified to provide oversight and administration of all outpatient resident experiences. Dr. Kass has served as a preceptor for first and second year Stony Brook University medical students for more than 10 years, and has been involved in the planning of the Program since its early stages. He is an avid photographer and enjoys travel and playing tennis.
