Farmers Insurance Careers
Like gardeners who must nurture their plants for long periods of time before harvesting them, the folks as Farmers have a similar approach to product development and problem-solving.
Broadly speaking, Farmers has a supportive, teamwork-driven culture that is people-focused, Cotton said. But having an appreciation for the slower pace of things at Farmers is essential for associates to succeed. The atmosphere at Farmers is nothing like a small startup, Cotton said.
At Farmers, to change existing products and policies or to add new ones requires an all-encompassing approach that solicits input from all functional areas, Cotton said. The process may have no definite endpoint, and the original idea is typically modified a number of times during the process.
“If you are frustrated by a slower pace…you will not like it here, ” Cotton said.
On the other hand, candidates who have worked in a similar environment will have a better chance of succeeding at Farmers, Cotton added.
If a candidate doesn’t have insurance industry experience, the next thing Cotton looks for is experience at a large corporation like Farmers. If a candidate doesn’t have experience at a large firm like Farmers, a candidate must demonstrate that he or she has the patience to handle projects that have no definite end dates and are subject to multiple revisions, Cotton said.
Although during the first year new hires spend most of their time learning how the business works, by the second year they should be able to walk an idea both vertically through their department and laterally across departments, Cotton said.
Big Data Drives Hiring Decisions
“You cannot work in an insurance company and not be comfortable in numbers and large number sets, ” Cotton said.
From employee compensation to product management, Farmers needs people who understand large sets of numbers and can do statistical analysis, Cotton said. Farmers is a very numerical, fact-based organization and the firm’s challenge is finding people who share a passion for analysis no matter what the functional area, Cotton explained.
Other qualities Farmers looks for in a candidate are an ability to collaborate, a knack for learning quickly, and integrity. Farmers indemnifies people and that mission requires honest people who approach the business from the customer’s perspective as well as the company’s, Cotton said.
For people who are trying to change careers and want to transition to a company like Farmers, the biggest roadblock to their success is an attitude of entitlement, Cotton said.
According to Cotton, the most attractive candidate is someone with an MBA and insurance experience. The second most attractive candidate is someone with a bachelor’s degree and insurance experience, followed by an MBA with work experience, but no insurance experience.

Is becoming a Farmer's Insurance Agent a good career choice?
Is there a good chance that I can be successful? I've been in commercial real estate now for 5 years and am looking for a career change. I'm nearly broke so will this be a problem for me?
If you are as good or better as you must have been selling real estate, then yes, go for it. But as mbrcatz says, the commissions will not come to you. You must find them continuously, get constant referrals, and sell, sell, sell. And in this market where people don't have a job, good luck.
